Read the article and links - it is all there - you continue to refuse to see it. As I stated in my earlier post - not getting into who is correct or who has refuted who - just saying info is out there giving Apple credit for pushing / envisioning / whatever the lightpeak approach.

I see it, I read it, and I read its rebuttal. Hardly something I'd base facts on, like Chuppa was doing. Again, not quite the citation I was looking for. As it stands, I think Chuppa was wrong.

if you buy headphones for the style, you shouldn't be buying pairs that cost three digits.

Wouldn't it be the opposite? If you buy them based on style, you'd have to spend more.

I'm sorry if my comment came off as being snide.

But it really bothers me when people post how wonderful an app is and how useful it is and how it completely replaces a much more expensive app. When in reality it is only a simple consumer level product.

Others read this forum and buy Pages thinking that they can eliminate the use of Word. Then they find out that it really isn't that compatible with Word files. If you email a windows user a .doc file exported from pages, 7 times out of 10 they have problems with it.

Most pro printshops, publishers, law firms etc. only except word .doc files. Almost all law firms require a revision history. Collaboration tools are useally also required. Word handles this expertly. Plus it has table of contents tools, book publishing tools, bibliography tools, direct faxing, multitudes of custom templates, VB programing hooks, etc. etc. None of this has an equivalent in Pages.

I'm glad you found a solution to your problem and I am glad that Pages satisfies your needs for word processing. Maybe someday it will move out of the "consumer" ranks and into the "Pro" ranks when more functionality is added. Apple seems to know the niche that they are addressing very well.

I've been using Pages since it first came out, and I've exchanged documents that were exported from Pages into Word format with other users without any problems. In general, of all word processors that I've worked with (and I've tried out quite a few), Pages has some of the best Word compatibility that I've seen. (That's not to say that I haven't seen some things move - i.e. graphics - on export, but the errors, if any, are generally minor).

To go back to the CAD analogy, in years gone by AutoCAD was the only CAD program, for all intents and purposes. Any new CAD programs were frequently measured, first and foremost, by their ability to exchange documents with AutoCAD. Of course, there was never a perfect ability to make such exchanges, as AutoDesk (makers of AutoCAD) kept the definitions of the dwg file format secret, and usually changed it from one version to the next. So, it made import/export difficult for the competitors, much like what MS does with Office. Did the fact that the exchanges weren't perfect mean that companies who chose to use other CAD packages weren't really professionals? No.

    Again, these are just tools.

Will Pages fit the bill for everyone? Of course not. Does MS Word fit the bill for everyone? No. That's why there are different products out there. Certainly, Pages is not as feature rich (you named some specifics, though you missed some of Pages features in your citation ;) ) as MS Word. It's also a much younger program. Is it going to be a Word Killer? Probably not for the foreseeable future. But it's quite capable of doing what probably 90% of what the Word users out there use Word for. If the other 10% are stupid enough to buy it without checking to see whether or not it has the features that they need to do their jobs, then they deserve to have their money go to Apple.

Oh, and what's this about "pro print shops" only taking Word files? I've never been to a print shop that didn't like PDF.

so i decided to try to reinstall windows on vmware this time giving it 1gig of ram to work with.... and surprisingly enough, parallels with 512mb of ram still felt smoother and snappier....
i hope that vmware reads these
cuz i decided to uninstall vmware and stick with parallels for now... the latest build runs really really well for me

ps: i also note that not a lot of people on the forum seem interested in this topic... (and instead go for threads like RUMOR! C2D MACBOOK, NEXT TUESDAY (OR THE ONE AFTER, OR AFTER! :D )

OK, here is a historic example:

Again, when Apple says "delayed" I'll accept it as delayed. Until they do, they said "ships this summer", I'll stick to believing it "ships this summer". You can try to rationalize it not shipping this summer all you want, the official word still is it's coming this summer.

Overuse of the word summer right there.

The "view" buttons in finder changed back to the old style.

Thank god, I wasn't fond of the new style. I found it kinda confusing and out of place.

At $79 a year it will probably be 5 years before the program moves to a commonly useful level where it may have the ability to replace MS Office. The very casual Word Processor user will not have to wait very long, maybe Pages 3 or Pages 4. With the 5 X $79 = $395 we move into the price range of the non-educational price of MS Office. But for the heavy Office user, 5 years may not be long enough.

I write lengthy academic papers, am writing a play and a book which I am pretty far into. So far, I don't miss Word one bit, and that is using Pages 2.

Pages has a lot of features. It just takes some time to learn how to use it.

You just leave the computers on 24/7 just folding. Not everyone does though. Also trying to fold more might influence your farm or purchases. Also trying beta programs is a way to compete. Also being on a team gives you more satisfaction than just your personal crunching.

    "Warning for losing Form data"

They've got my money :D (And Firefox-style Find!)

And I really have to believe that the old metal look will be gone in the end, replaced by the new iTunes look.

Current theme count for the record:

    * White aqua (with three different toolbar styles: old, unified/no-line, and little-icons-on-gray-pills like Mail)

    * Textured metal

    * Smooth metal (iTunes)

    * Dashboard (non-aqua sliders)

    * Black bezel (like the floating controls in iPhoto)

    * Pro aqua (gray with thinner title bars--Final Cut etc.)

    * EDIT: new "quick look (http://guides.macrumors.com/Image:leopardquicklook.png)" theme?

All of those are used by multiple apps. There are also special variations like GarageBand, but those are fun and not objectionable to me.

EDIT: Actually, none of the above are objectionable to me--they have their uses--just so we get down to ONE metal look instead of two :) And my vote for best toolbar is the big icons (not gray pills), but in the unified/no-line format. Just like Tiger's System Preferences. (Not like Mail, not like Safari Preferences.) But it looks like the gray pill thing is spreading in Leopard. I can deal... just make it more consistent.

Don't get me started on all the different kinds of non-icon toolbar buttons that appear in metal apps :) Some look like glass, some like metal, etc.....

You need some strong suction cups to remove the screen (the whole back chassis is one piece, the only access is via the screen) and more importantly a dust-free environment, otherwise when you put the screen back on (or rather the glass pane in front of the actual screen) you can easily trap dust between the glass and the monitor.
The difficult thing is the dust-free environment.

So, no, it isn't possible for the "non-geek" OP. ;)

These are all just rumours anyway.

Well the Samsung Series 9 already uses the chip that CNET is speculating will be in the MacBook Air, so we can compare its graphics performance.

It will be interesting to see changes the parallels will make. competition is nice. unless you are microsoft...

..who won't let you legally (http://download.microsoft.com/documents/useterms/Windows%20Vista_Ultimate_English_9d10381d-6fa8-47c7-83b0-c53f722371fa.pdf) install a "Home" version of Vista in a virtual enviroment, forcing you to pay more for the Ultimate version.

Yawn. What's the point? This thing will have a shelf life of 5.5 months at most and then it will be superceded by a more powerful model. Surely anyone who wanted an iPhone 4 (white or black) has bought one by now. How many holdouts can there SERIOUSLY be??

I doubt theres anyone waiting specifically for this phone, but there are still people who are coming off contract and this is a fresh option vs the black model. People still buy older phones. The 3GS is still for sale and I'm sure there are people buying it.

I have had Leopard... anyone got any questions??

Yeah, I got a few about iCal.

    1) Is there now a way to shift several events in time simultaneously, so you don't have to change each one individually when you want to move a group of events?

    2) When you select several events from different calendars and copy and paste them do they all turn into the same calendar category like the current version of iCal operates?

    3) Are there any more display options that let you control how events are displayed?

Woah there big boy, calm down.

He is a father who has a daughter, put yourself in his shoes...

Also when did he explicitly state he "waits outside toilet doors to beat people up"?

So if I had a daughter I would become prejudice of transgender people?

Don't discount microsoft - they have money to lose for years in trying to get #1 for MP3 - slowly they creep up and overturn Apple - apple doesn't ahve the same stamina.

A long term commitment, not a short term thing.

$9,500,000,000 - that's just sitting around in cash with no long term debt. I think Apple's got plenty of "stamina"...

I wasn't expecting the iMac refresh so quick. I thought it would be after the Mac OS X Lion refresh. i been saving for my first iMac but not there yet so I'll have to still wait. Perhaps I'll wait till Mac OS X Lion is pre installed in late summer. That is if I can wait that long lol
